Patterns of Intercultural Communication
SPC4710
In this writing class, I explored the diverse practices and difficulties that occur during communication within and among people of contrasting cultures. I also explored Colombian culture in great depth, as one of the main assignments of the course to examine and interview a person from an ethnic culture that we are not a part of and want to learn more about. In our studies of low and high context cultures, Hofstede’s Insights, nonverbal kinesics and haptics, and other aspects of intercultural communication, I can now say that cultural relativism, the idea that a person's beliefs and practices should be understood based on that person's own culture, guides the way I speak and think.

Internship in Spanish
SPN3943
As part of the Beyond120 Spanish and Portuguese Internship Program, I worked with Children Beyond Our Borders, a non-profit organization that provides underprivileged Latin students in Gainesville & Latin America sustainable access to education. As a Health Education intern, I created two videos for children in English & Spanish about good oral hygiene habits and reducing dental anxiety. I also helped coordinate a free health screening, at which I hosted my own oral hygiene games and reading station with my children’s book to entertain & educate young patients. Through my projects, I was able to equip children with health literacy to take their health into their hands.

Spanish Virtual Tourism
SPN3930
In this class, we explored Spanish-speaking countries virtually and their aspects of tourism, through means of Youtube videos, interactive websites, and more. Each of my classmates explored a Spanish-speaking country's culture and tourism in depth, whether it be gastronomic, cultural, adventure, academic, or sports tourism. Through weekly discussion board posts and biweekly conversations with a person of our designated country for virtual touring through TalkAbroad, I learned the significance of being a culturally respectful tourist and broadened my understanding of the world around me.

In this class, we delved into healthcare in Latin America and Spanish terminology. Through group assignments, worksheets, Socratic seminars, and problem-based learning, I created a great foundation for working with Spanish-speaking patients in a healthcare setting, be it dental or medical, which I apply in my shadowing and volunteer experiences. I also learned the importance of providing culturally competent care to keeps patients safe and build trust through encouraging empathetic, transparent dialogues about health.
